Evaluation of total alloplastic temporo-mandibular joint replacement with two different types of prostheses : a three-year prospective study

2015

Background Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) replacement has been used clinically for years. The objective of this study was to evaluate outcomes achieved in patients with two different categories of TMJ prostheses. Material and Methods All patients who had a TMJ replacement (TMJR) implanted during the study period from 2006 through 2012 were included in this 3-year prospective study. All procedures were performed using the Biomet Microfixation TMJ Replacement System, and all involved replacing both the skull base component (glenoid fossa) and the mandibular condyle. Results Fifty-seven patients (38 females and 19 males), involving 75 TMJs with severe disease requiring reconstruction (39 unila…

Long-term results of the use of silicone sheets after diskectomy in the temporomandibular joint: clinical, radiographic and histopathologic findings

1999

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the long-term results of a group of patients who had the disk of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) removed and permanently replaced by a silicone sheet. The study group comprised 48 patients, treated in the period from 1983 to 1993. In eight patients, the implants had to be removed after an average interval of 5.6 years and they were submitted for histopathological examination. Twenty-five of the 40 patients with silastic implants in place, and five of the 8 patients who had their implants removed, were available for long-term follow-up (mean interval of 7.0 years, SD 2.8 years). Clinical function was rated according to the Helkimo Dysfunction In…

New aspects in the histological examination of polyethylene wear particles in failed total joint replacements.

2002

The most important long-term complication in total joint replacements is aseptic osteolysis. Wear particles such as polyethylene (PE) debris are considered to be one of the causes that play a central role. Several studies indicated that PE can be visualised in paraffin-embedded tissue sections not only by polarised light, but also after oil red staining. To determine whether oil red staining enables sensitive detection of PE, we examined staining of mechanically-produced PE particles by oil red. Furthermore, we studied oil red staining of paraffin-embedded tissue specimens of patients with failed uncemented and cemented total knee and hip prostheses. We applied double labelling of sections …

Mid- to long-term results after bipolar radial head arthroplasty.

2009

Background Radial head arthroplasty is considered the treatment of choice for unreconstructable radial head fractures in the acute fracture situation. Although short-term results in the current literature are promising, replacement of the radial head remains controversial as long-term results are still missing. We report our 8.8-year results after treatment with a bipolar radial head prosthesis by Judet. Materials and methods In our department, 19 patients were treated with bipolar radial head arthroplasty between 1997 and 2001. Seventeen of these patients—14 men and 3 women—were examined retrospectively after 106 months (range, 78-139). Of these, 9 patients were treated primarily, 7 patien…

Experimentelle Untersuchungen zum Problem der Verankerung von Hftendoprothesen

1973
